Adding & Verifying Domain To Google Workspace
Go to “admin.google.com” in the admin console click on “domains” if you don’t have a domain section in your admin console click on the “menu icon” at the top left of the screen then select “account” then “domains“.
On this page click on “manage domains” on the manage domains page you’ll have to choose if you want to add a domain or a domain alias so what’s the difference if you want every existing user on a primary name to always have an email address on the domain you’re adding.
Choose “add a domain alias” this will be the case if the domain you’re adding to your google workspace account is a substitute for another domain.
Like for example with a different spelling if you want to create users and email addresses independently or want to create a group for the domain you’re adding without creating a user choose add a domain.
This is the most common case if you don’t know which option you should go for choose add a domain it’s the most flexible option. Now click on “add a domain” enter your domain name then click on “continue” and verify domain ownership.
On the next page you can select the method to use to verify your domain if you already have a website with google analytics running you can choose alternate methods if like me you don’t have a website yet use the recommended method in the drop down list.
You can choose Your domain name provider or registrar if you do you’ll have specific instructions to verify your domain with your registrar.
I registered my domain name with Namecheap which is not in the list but even then I’m using a third-party DNS server for the domain name. I want to add which is not in the list either the method I’m going to show you will work with all registrars.
Even the ones that are in the list and all DNS servers scroll all the way to the bottom of the drop-down list and choose “other” choosing other not only gives you full control over the process but it’s the entry you should choose.
If you only have access to the DNS server of the domain google will now tell you to add a txt record for your domain name now copy the txt record value by hitting “Control c on a pc or command c on a mac“.
Log into your DNS server I’m using cloudflare I made an article about how to set up cloudflare as your DNS server for your domain I’ll put a link here: Add Cloudflare to Website Easy Method 2021.
In cloudflare select your “domain name” then go to the “DNS tab” if you don’t have cloudflare just go to the “DNS settings” of your domain here “add a txt record” for the name enter the “@”symbol this is a shortcut that represents your root domain name which is what we want.
You don’t have to change the TTL setting for the content paste the value you copied from google by hitting “control v” on a pc or “command v” On a mac hit save your txt record is now set up go back to google workspace and hit “verify“.
Cloudflare is a very fast DNS server so the txt record was propagated almost instantaneously that’s why my domain is verified immediately if your DNS server or registrar is slower you won’t be able to verify your domain Name right away.
Don’t worry just wait a few hours for the txt record to propagate and come back to google workspace you’ll be able to verify your domain once you’ve verified your domain you don’t need the txt record anymore.
You can safely delete it make sure not to delete a wrong DNS record as it can make your website emails or other services go down. Now you can create a new user or a new Group with your domain name but emails won’t work since you didn’t set up your DNS server to point to Google’s email servers.
so if you want to know how to set up your DNS server to point to your google workspace account check out this link: Gmail MX Records DNS Server to Google Workspace 2021.
